Game Showdown: Super Mario Bros. VS Sonic 1
Hello, and today is our first Game showdown. An Game showdown is a match between a game series, movie, sequels, or anything. Since this is our first one of these showdowns, today’s showdown are between Super Mario Bros. for NES and the classic Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis. These trilogies are the main series for the NES and SEGA Genesis.Since this is the first OCAS showdown we’re gonna explain how it works: One of us usually either Tristan or me, (in this case me) talk about some key points about the games, movies, series or whatever. In this case we’re gonna talk about Gameplay, Sound, Graphics, and Controls because the games competing are 8-bit and 16-bit games. Sonic is our mascot but I personally think Mario is kinda our second mascot. Mario and Sonic, Nintendo and SEGA should make a Mario and Sonic platformer, oh wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. Anyways, Let’s Start.
Gameplay
The gameplay for the Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 is stomping Goombas and collecting coins, and eating Mushrooms. The 2nd one had a different gameplay as you pick up plants and throw them at enemies, but that’s not what we’re focusing on.
The gameplay for the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is fairly simple compared to Mario games. It’s mostly collecting rings, destroying Badniks, avoiding dangers, beating bosses and running around.
At the time when Sonic came to the world, he had new gameplay, better graphics, and many more new things. Mario had memorable gameplay and is known all over the world. So, the better gameplay goes to Sonic the Hedgehog that had newer gameplay that was much faster than Mario gameplay.
Sound
The sound in the Super Mario Bros is memorable and nice to hear. This caused the classic World 1-1 theme to be known all over the world, and is still enjoyed by many people.
The sound in Sonic the Hedgehog is also quite memorable and had more length and detail than the sound of Super Mario Bros, but this is mainly due to the Genesis’ more advanced sound hardware.
The sound category goes to Super Mario Bros. due to its special and memorable sound. That’s a tie at 1-1 for both games!
Graphics
The graphics in Super Mario Bros. have been the base for every graphic in the 2D-Mario Games, and even though due to the NES’s limited 16-color palette.
Now for Sonic the Hedgehog’s graphics – they are rather colorful, have many variations, and are easily remembered among all gamers. Unlike Mario Games, Sonic’s sprite changed in every game in the series so far.
Anyways, the graphics category goes to Sonic the Hedgehog for it’s lush and vibrant colors. Oooh, a 2-1 score! Let’s see the what happens in the final category, Controls:
Controls
Let’s talk about controls. Super Mario Bros. controls were fairly simple and easy – DPad to walk, A and B to jump. Nice and easy for even the casual gamer.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s controls were a bit more difficult to understand. DPad to walk, ABC to jump, down to roll, up to look up, Jump+Down to spindash. That’s a bit more complicated, but still.
The final category goes to… (drumroll please) Super Mario Bros. because it’s the simplest and has stayed the same for almost 3 decades. That’s a hot tie at 2-2!
Wrapping it up
Our final score is a 2-2, leaving both games tied up. I guess next time we need to pick two more different games. Anyways, feel free to tell us what you liked and disliked, and what you think of these games and we might feature it next time!
