Super Mario Bros. 3 Box Artwork.

Hello gamers and OCAS fans and welcome to another OCAS review, and today we will be looking at the amazing Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES. This is the 3rd Mario Platformer for the NES and the last game in the Super Mario Bros trilogy. Without further ado, let’s jump into this review.

Story

King Koopa (Bowser), has stolen the 7 magic wands from the 7 worlds neighboring the Mushroom Kingdom, alone of turing the kings into animals. He gives one wand to each of his 7 sons, the Koopalings, to wreck the Mushroom Kingdom’s neighboring worlds. Soon after that, Princess Peach has been kidnapped and it’s up to Mario and Luigi, to stop Bowser, his kids, and save the worlds and the princess.

Gameplay

The gameplay for Super Mario Bros 3 is the same as the first game and is an upgrade from the second game, you run in an 2-D world collecting coins, eating mushrooms and stomp Goombas. The worlds are much more fun to play and look fantasic. You also get new power ups such as the Raccoon Mario which allows Mario to do a tail attack and fly for a short time , Frog Mario, which allows you to jump higher and swim faster, Tanooki Mario, like Raccoon Mario, allows you to fly and turn into a stone, and last the Hammer Bro Mario which allows you throw hammers like an Hammer Bro.

Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced several suits to alter the character's abilities.

Each world has it’s own challenge such as easy and hard. Your main goal is to beat levels of the world then get to the castle the reach the airship. If you make it to the end of the airship, you fight one of the Koopalings. Jump on them three times, and you beat the world, get a letter from the princess and get a new item. Now time for the things I hated about the gameplay. First off, you can only hold up to 28 items, which is not enough. World’s 6, 7, and 8 are killer levels. You’ll keep dying on them an keep wasting your items. Soon enough, you will only have stars, clouds, and P-Wings (which are useful). Second, Luigi is only playable in 2-Player, which is a disgrace because unlike Super Mario Galaxy’s 1 & 2, you can play as Luigi in Single Player. So that’s all the gameplay for Super Mario Bros 3. It’s an upgrade of the first game and an improvement of the 2nd game.

Sound

The music in Super Mario Bros 3 is amazing and truly one of the best gaming soundtracks in history. It feels like Mario when you hear peaceful and fun music to scary and cold fortress music. The sound effects are not really that special. So overall, the sound in Super Mario Bros 3 is amazing and one of the best game soundtracks, ever!

Graphics

The graphics for Super Mario Bros 3 are the best and I mean the BEST NES graphics that I’ve ever seen! The look very detailed and look amazing for NES standards, and since the first SMB game’s graphics, it looks like Nintendo took their time and did their best on making the graphics look great for NES standards. So overall, these are the best graphics on the NES, ever!

Controls

The controls for Super Mario Bros 3 are simple and easy to learn. You move with the D-PAD left or right and you jump with the A button. To charge and your run meter, you hold the button and pressing A when it’s at full power. To do a tail attack (no not the tail attack from Sonic Adventure) you press the B button. To select an item on the world map you press the B button. So overall the controls for Super Mario Bros 3 are easy to learn.

Secrets

There are many secrets in SMB3 but the one that is the best are the 3 Warp Whistles that look like the whistles from The Legend Of Zelda. There are 2 in World 1 and one in World 2. We’ll  tell you when we make our OCAS book on game secrets. They help you skip hard worlds and go to another one. It’s like the Warp Zone (No it’s not from Sonic the Hedgehog) from the first SMB. There are many other secrets like, the White Mushroom house, and much more.

Super Mario Bros. 3 gets a perfect 10/10! Here is the breakdown:
